Underage and Gay
Underage and Gay
A recent survey by Stonewall found that the average age for young people to come out in Britain is now just 15 years of age. For the first time, that’s below the legal age of consent. So what’s like to be Underage and Gay?
We chart a vital 6 month period in the life of 5 bright, charismatic and Gay teenagers, all between 14 and 17, as they transition from childhood to being a young adult. We follow them as they experience their first relationships, first rejections and suffer judgement and bullying in a world which may be superficially tolerant and progressive, but underneath still holds many of the prejudices that have dogged Gay people for decades. Increasingly, younger people are finding the self-awareness and the confidence to come out to their families, peers and teachers when still in school. But, while it may be easier to gain respect and support for revealing one’s sexuality now than ever before, we’ll also show that, for this vulnerable age group, coming out is still a hugely important event fraught with danger.
This one off documentary combines intimate first-hand experiences to celebrate and empathise with British teenagers as they come to terms with and share their sexuality whilst dealing with the maelstrom that is teenage life.
